Two Cases of Pseudothrombocytopenia Due to EDTA Anticoagulant

Abstract
EDTA is one of commonly used anticoagulants as chelating agents which are more
useful for the preservation of cells and morphology than others because they do not
cause significant changes in the size and shape of cells. However, EDTA can rarely
induce a significant problem such as fasely low platelet count since EDTA agglutinate
platelets. Authors haute experienced two cases of pseudothrombocytopenia due to EDTA
anticoagulants in a 52 year female and a 35 year female patients. Peripheral blood smear
of patients showed marked platelet clumping in the feathery edge and then it was able
to confirm normal number of platelet using citrate and heparin anticoagulants and also
was observed even distribution of platelet instead of platelet clumping.
